Navarakizhi Swedana Treatment in Rishikesh - Ayurveda Navarakizhi Swedana Therapy

Navarakizhi is a highly effective Ayurvedic therapy based on the concept of sweat inducing the body to strengthen its muscles and rejuvenate the body, it is also known as: Shashikha Shali Pinda Sweda (Shashika is sixty, Shali is rice, Pinda is poultice, Sweda is sweat). After being processed with milk and herbal decoctions, Shashtika Shali rice is used for Ayurvedic treatments after it was harvested in sixty days.

The process

Balakwath is a decoction prepared from boiled Sida Cordifolia or Balamula roots. Before using the roots in the Navarakizhi procedure, they are washed and cleaned with sterile water.

Once the decoction is prepared, it is divided into two parts. One portion is heated for a short time in milk while the other portion is cooked with milk and rice.

To prepare the poultices, the cooking rice is placed on pieces of sterile cloth and bound and then tightly wrapped. This type of therapy is available at the Best Rishikesh Navarakizhi Centre.

Purva Karma

It begins with abhyangam oil massage and involves excessive sweating by applying heat for more than an hour. To prevent the brain and sense organs from being affected by the heat, Amalaki Tala-dharana may be performed.

Pradhan Karma

As part of the Pradhan Karma, four attendants or masseurs work in synchronisation together. They dip each poultice in the medicated milk that is continually warmed and rub it rhythmically on the individual's body. As the poultices cool down during the procedure, they are replaced with fresh, warm ones as they are applied in a downward direction from the nape of the neck down to the hips and feet. No interruptions occur during the duration of this process.

Paschat Karma

After the Pradhan Karma is completed, the rice is gently rubbed over the body of the individual for a few moments before it is removed with a tissue or sterile cloth. This is performed on sterile cloth after the Tala-dharana is removed. The oil from the head and body should be removed by taking a hot water shower after the procedure.

Procedural time

Navarakizhi usually takes 70-105 minutes to perform. Treatment duration varies depending on severity of conditions. It can take anywhere between 7 and 21 days to complete.
