Here are the list of most frequently asked questions and thier answers about ayurveda therapies and treatments from the Ayurveda experts.
Ayurveda takes the approach of eliminating the cause of the ailment rather than treating the symptoms as done by other treatments. Hence an Ayurvedic treatment will truly eliminate the malady you have been suffering from. Another advantage is that Ayurveda uses the least chemicals and follows natural therapy which means there are no side effects.
Ayurveda is not opposed to western medicine. It is a myth that Ayurveda is opposite the western medical system. In fact in some cases a combination therapy can work wonders. Ayurveda differs from the western medicine in the way it treats disease. Western medicine groups treatment by symptoms and treats people having same symptoms as similar. Ayurveda on the other hand works on the cause of disease rather than symptoms and treats every individual as a unique entity and the therapy is specialized in each case.
Ayurveda takes the two step approach to diagnosing the cause of the disease. This ancient medical system works on the cause rather than the symptoms, so for a person getting first time treatment the system of diagnostic may seem strange. The first step is physical examination which includes checking pulse, marks on the body and by interrogating about the disease from patients’ experience. The second step is to determine the strength of the body which determines the kind of therapy which will be applied. This examination constitutes examining tissue quality, physique, mental strength, adaptability and body constitution (As per Tridoshas), capacity of food intake, ability of exerting (exercise) and the age of the individual. On this basis the strength of the body is determined as extremely strong, intermediate strength and low strength. Only after the two steps the therapy can be determined.
Ayurveda works on the causes of the disease, and focuses on rooting out the cause. Hence the diagnostic procedure takes a longer time than normal western medical diagnostics. The treatment also follows a different approach of detoxifying and then rejuvenating in that order. Hence it takes time for getting treated, but the treatment does not use chemicals much and makes the individual feel healthy without any side effects.
Health in Ayurveda means an equilibrium state of the body. The equilibrium is of the Tridoshas, Dhatu, Mala and also the basic elements which lead to a peaceful mind, responsive body and pure soul. This equilibrium is disturbed due to erratic lifestyle and maintaining a disciplined lifestyle is the key to health.
Ayurvedic treatment concerns all the five senses. Specific nutrition and herbal therapy works on taste, aroma therapy using aromatic oils and incense sticks are used for the sense of smell, the sense of touch is treated by Yoga Asanas and techniques and massage therapy, the sense of hearing is treated by chanting and mantras, and sight sense by using colours. The most popular techniques used are:
Changing diet to ease digestion and decrease pressure on organs. That is the reason Ayurveda prescribes vegetarian light food with less or no spices. Also the timing of food intake is also important. This is called diet therapy.
The detoxification method of Panchakarma for internal cleansing of the body.
Shirodhara the pouring of oil on head for calming all the senses and rejuvenating the nerve tissues.
Marma therapy by massaging on specific points of the body. This has really magical effect on various organs.
Herbal therapy which is close to nature and has no side effects, like chewing specific herbs as per the disease. Chewing Basil and Neem leaves early morning on empty stomach is the herbal therapy for diabetics.
The three main texts that guide Ayurvedic treatment methods are Shushruta Samhita, Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridya. This trio of books is known as Brihatrayi and has been modified as per the results. The Charaka Samhita is the most ancient text on treatment of disease. It was compiled by Sage Charaka around 1500 B.C. The physical examination and treatment with herbs is given in detail in this book. Shushruta Samhita was written by Sage Shushruta who is also known as the father of surgery. The main writings are about the internal organs, ways to perform surgery and the various groups of surgical instruments. The Ashtanga Hridya is the most recent compilation which contains specific methods of treatment for different disease stages.
Ayurveda is basically divided into eight branches. This includes General medicine (Kaya Chikitsa), surgery (Shalya Chikitsa), Eye, ear, nose and throat therapy (Shalkya Tantra Chikitsa), specialized branch for children and women (Kaumarbrihtya), toxicology (Agada Tantra), Psychiatry (Bhuta Vidya), rejuvenation therapy (Rasayan Chikitsa) and Sexology (Vajikarna).
All the therapies are based on determining the body type of the individual. There are seven possibilities of body types based on the Tridoshas. They are (i) Vata (ii) Pitta (iii) Kapha (iv) Vata-Pitta (v) Vata-Kapha (vi) Pitta-Kapha and (vii) Tridosha. All of the seven types will have different symptoms by which they can be identified by experienced Ayurvedic medical practitioners.
